DraftSight – Flip out for Surface Finish Symbols

Visit DraftSight.com to explore DraftSight 2019 and learn how you can experience the freedom to do more with a better 2D drafting and 3D design experience.

Continuing the blogs on DraftSight’s toolbox features, this post will be covering the Surface Finish Symbols and Flip Surface Finish Symbol icons.

Similar to Welding Symbols (discussed last blog), I find these commands especially beneficial, because they save space in your graphics display by portraying important information about the texture of the objects in your designs – in a compact and organized format.

Both icons are located in the Symbols section of the Toolbox tab in the ribbon. When selected, Surface Finish Symbol opens an options window allowing you to enter your symbol preferences.

Keep in mind that the option you choose from the Style drop-down menu will determine the kind of Properties you’ll specify.

More specifically, Style options like Basic and Machining Required will prompt you to define multiple characteristics, including your Lay Direction, Material Removal Allowance, and Roughness Min and Max. Whereas, the JIS Styles only ask for Property specifications on the JIS Texture and Roughness.

Pro tip: click on the Settings… icon in the lower left corner of the Surface Finish Symbols window to specify your symbol’s layer preferences, and Text style and size.

As always, once you’re satisfied with your entered information, press OK, and your symbol will appear attached to your cursor. Finally, specify a destination and rotation angle for your symbol directly in the drawing display, and voila!

Lastly, the Flip Surface Finish Symbol icon does exactly what its name suggests – it flips the orientation of your already inserted Surface Finish Symbols in just one click.

I hope this post encourages you to include these time and space saving icons in your daily DraftSight drawing process!
