DraftSight: Units
Visit DraftSight.com to explore DraftSight 2019 and learn how you can experience the freedom to do more with a better 2D drafting and 3D design experience.
As my DraftSight journey has progressed, I always make sure to check the units I’m working in to ensure that my designs will align with my life-size vision.
That said, today’s blog focuses on another topic that takes us back to the basics of DraftSight drawing – how to change the Units of your graphics display to best fit your project at hand.
Located in the Manage tab in the Customization section of the ribbon, the Options icon contains your unit settings. When selected, a window with multiple tabs on the left hand side will appear.
Click on the Drawing Settings tab, and then specify the Unit System option. Here, you’ll have access to both Length (linear) and Angle (angular) unit choices.
The Length options include Architectural (using feet and inches), Decimal, Engineering (feet and inches), Fractional, and Scientific (scientific exponential notation).
Likewise, the Angle options include Decimal Degrees (metric units), Degrees/Minutes/Seconds, Grads (400 grads equals 360°), Radians (2 pi radians equals 360°), and Surveyor’s Unit System.
DraftSight even allows you to change the precision of your Length and Angle units – just select their drop-down menus and choose from 0 to 8 decimal places.
Lastly, the Block units format drop-down menu does exactly what its name suggests – it lists multiple unit options for your Block entities to adopt upon insertion. I usually prefer the Unitless option, because it makes the blocks I create automatically take on the current units in my drawing.
Pro tip: check out the Preview section of your unit settings before exiting the command to make sure you’re satisfied with your changes.
I hope this post encourages you to take advantage of DraftSight’s Unit System options!
